Need some tank help

What is this tube on the port side?

Here's a pic with the end cover off, from the Haynes' enthusiast guide book.

Mike.
I used the Haynes' automotive repair books for YEARS. It wasn't until I bought their Sherman and Tiger books that I knew they made these. I'm really glad they did!

I love 'em. Their PZIII and Stug books are fun reads, and the Churchill volume made me realize what a beautifully ugly tank it is.

Pre-internet, Haynes manuals were my saviours for so many of the bangers I owned. Chilton manuals not so much!
