A fellow from our Tuesday Make Modeling Mediocre Again group made a tool for creating tight rolls for paper modeling. He took a dowel and some stiff metal wire. Measuring the wire diameter, he drilled two holes in an end of the dowel, the holes placed as closely together as possible without compromising strength. Then he just slid the paper down between the stiff wire and wrapped away. The simple gizmo was actually rather strong, and worked beautifully. Maybe something similar could be even stronger.

...steel pins set in the end of a brass tube filled with epoxy or JB Weld?
