A Bridge Too Far

Post by michaelwhittmann »

I was wondering what everyone thought of this one.

IMHO wonderful. Love the scene where the Irish Guards
begin their advance.

If it's been discussed before I got here, can someone send me
the link?

Great movie with a fantastic cast. The scale is still impressive to this day.

Blaming Montgomery was a mistake in my opinion when the whole sorry saga was down to General "Boy" Browning and the failure to big up the US Paras and their leadership was a disappointment.
As an "Ex" it has never been an easy watch indeed the best description I can give it could be a "Curates Egg" of a movie.
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

Montie wanted to get to Berlin before Patton.
Pride, jealousy, hubris, "need to take credit" etc.

Don't blame him; Patton would have done the
same thing.

My favorite behind the scenes fact is the mouckup Shermans built on car chassis. They can be spotted in several scenes.

You can see one of them in this amateur video.

Never saw that video before Kaczor. I knew there were two (I thought) on wheels but the video said they built five!

That was very cool! As many times as I've seen the movie, I had no idea about the steel-and-plastic Sherman bodies sitting atop a Land Rover. I remember that when the movie first came out, there was an uproar from military vehicle collectors about the Kubelwagen getting crushed, (until the movie company said that it was a fiberglass replica). Thank you for sharing it.

A sidelight: my father, a veteran of the South Pacific, '42 to '46 (even after the war), went with a friend and me to see the movie when it first came out. After the movie, my father commented: "A Bridge Too Far?" Nah, "A Movie Too Long."

The movie is great. The only drawback for me is Gene Hackman's terrible Polish accent. ;D
