Guess that Tank detail, part 13

Looking at period pics of Tiger I's, saw this and wondered what it was. It's the squarish piece partially covering the Balkenkreuz on the tanks side hull.
Any ideas?

Maybe it is a captured and partially-repaired Tiger. Perhaps the fellow in the assistant driver’s hatch is not German, but a testing engineer at Aberdeen or another Allied site.

It looks to me like an emergency attempt to bolt on a loose piece of Schurzen.

I dont think I have ever seen a Tiger 1 with schurzen armour it was pretty much exclusive to the Panzer 4 Ausf G/H/J and the PZ111 and the Stugs.

Nahh Herr Dr. it's S13 from Das Reich 2nd SS Panzer in the fall of 43 on the Eastern Front. The full picture shows it rolling as part of a column of Tigers.
Not Schurzen, jarndice is correct.
H'mmm.

I apologize. Schurzen was the wrong word. I've been on the road for the last day or so. What I meant to say that it looks very much like a field repair to a weak side plate, and brain spat out, "oh, near tracks, schurzen."

It is possibly a small patch to cover a hole

More coffee on the key board! Great answer!
Going to have to look for a water (coffee) proof system if I'm to remain on this forum!

Looking at the damage in that area of the tank. Note one of the mangled guards also has a hole in and it appearing to partially cover the iron cross my guess would be a field repair
