Such a functional looking little critter. Big gun in a shoebox stuck on a happy little chassis. My reference books have very few pictures ofvthese so I'm looking forward to seeing it from all angles.

It's great to see all of these builds taking mostly plain ol' HL stuff and giving them the master's finishing touch.

Go s.IG.33 Go!

A way to make the 15cm gun mobile to keep up with the infantry. But it's not as dodgy as the first version based on the Pz.I chassis.

Crikey! My group build has been lagging way behind the progress of the other projects. Some are almost finished!

Time to get a move on before I give up hope.

The first thing was to recheck some of the reference sources for details before I start cutting things up. This image from the Kubinka Tank Museum is clear and large, so you can get a look at some of the details. As there are not the large collection of contemporary photos, this is as good as it gets. I can also see several differences compared to some of the model kit builds.

Image

Nevertheless, I am still using the AFV 1/35 kit to measure dimensions, so I partially assembled the main structure. Dimensions take from this were proportioned out to 1/16 and compared to the Tauchpanzer upper hull. The Heng Long dimensions were comfortably close.

Image

My next step was to peel off the extra pieces from the Tauchpanzer - a close look shows some of these pieces will be applicable the the SIG.

Image

The main turret plate was then cut off - unfortunately the Panzer III top plate ends just behind the front inspection hatches.

Image

This meant I needed to install an extension piece to match the SIG, and I used a right-angled piece salvaged from the main turret plate to help locate the new front plate. This interfered with the gearboxes, so the gearbox plates were ground down. I also removed some parts moulded into the track guards, including suppors and tools.

Image

Using the previously calculated dimensions, the new plates were cut up from plasticard. At the moment they have not been glued until I can make sure it can be assembled truly square.

unfortunately I didnt know it is a rather unique tank, otherwise I would have made some more pictures.

That last picture with the casement top weld lines and weapon graze marks is most excellent!
