Hi All

I'm totally new to tank modelling but I've dabbled in RC controlled boats, cars and planes for many years.

I'm now awaiting delivery of an Armortek M26 Pershing kit and found this forum when researching how I should configure my e9xr transmitter (ex Turnigy 9XR) and 6 ch receiver for use on the tank. My first stumbling block is which stick(s) to use for direction, turret rotation, barrel elevation etc so all advice gratefully received from those who've gone before. I thought that I'd mock up a few servos to bench test the config to give me a head start

OK, I know I'm getting ahead of myself but we all know about the devil and idle hands...

Hello and welcome to this forum.
For the functions on your Radio? I advise you to read the Blog of "Rad" member of this forum. Generally the sleeves are used for the main functions, front / rear. Right, left, turret rotation, and the inters (auxiliary functions) cannon firing, machine guns. headlights etc. it is also according to your personal choice? but there is all the same a basic principle, used by many worlds.

PS: 6 channels? it's a fair bit for a tank, 8 is a minimum, especially with Amortek 1/6

Welcome along!

The armortek forum and Facebook groups would be your best place to go in my opinion, those chaps work with large scale all the time and will be familiar with the running systems.

Welcome. Most of us don't have Armortek tanks, but there is a thread over on RCUniverse specifically about the Pershing. There are at least two guys building them now, but as far as I know the electronics for the Pershings haven't shipped yet.

You have a very flexible radio, which is the most important part of the toy, is a great start.

All my toys are driven like this:

Ch 1 is throttle, because every model has at least, throttle. Left stick, vertical.
Ch 2 is steering, almost every model has steering. Right stick horizontal
Ch 3 is turret rotation, left stick horizontal
Ch 4 is elevation, right stick vertical.

Most people do (IMHO) the mistake of having both steering and throttle in the same stick. Doing it my way gives you a much better control, and considering you have a big piece of steel that is critical, because it can be dangerous.

But that is my tip after years of testing pretty much everything. Other people would give you other opinions.

Thanks to everyone for your messages - and especially to Jophaur86 for the link to the "Rad" blog, and to Rad himself for the reply. I appreciate that 6 channels is on the low side, but my transmitter is capable of 16 and I'm just looking at getting underway without more bottomless expense at this stage as I already have a pile of 6 channel receivers lying around.

My initial thoughts were indeed one stick for steering and throttle control of both tracks and the other stick for turret rotation and barrel elevation leaving me 2 channels maybe to be multiplexed into multiple switching functions for future lights/smoke etc, maybe with Arduino control/assistance. However, now have I read Rad's comment on his own experience then I certainly have doubts. Luckily I have plenty of time to understand what I need to do before a wheel turns under power (maybe 4-5 months?) but I don't want to be unprepared with a finished model with no ideas on controlling it.

Thanks also to tankme for the link to the rcuniverse forum which I hadn't seen. There's also a guy on youtube "Tony's Workshop" with a series of videos on building the Pershing and I'm following along there too. He's about 4 months into the build and just about to fit the motors...

I would love to buy the Armortek Pershing and frankly I just sold my Honda VFR motorcycle so I could buy it with funds on hand, but with the current situation with the economy I'd rather have that cash sitting in the bank for contingencies. Good luck with the build though!
