Vintage Tamiya Sherman Question

Hello.
The hobby shop I used to go to [redacted] years ago had a Tamiya Sherman with a metal "fin" mounted above the second set of bogie wheels.
I found a pic online of what it looked like, though it's in a different location (which is where Tamiya calls for it to be installed), what is the purpose of this fin?

It is a Tamiya safety feature to protect against the “pinch” point of the tracks and sprocket.

Hmm, looks like it doesnt quite fully cover the lower pinch point if running in reverse. Murphy’s law being what it is, it does seem well positioned to act as a blade to amputate the mangled tip of a finger being pulled into the lower pinch point. Makes for a neater wound, I suppose.

I always thought it was a poor attempt of a sand shield.

I'd bet that even lawyers who built that model didn't put on the stickers--and probably not the goofy shield.

HehHeh! Herr Doc!
I felt it was needed with the Crackerbox Palace. That thing can injure you just running over your foot.
