This is the inside of a HL IR tower. It is as simple as can be. No led's, just one sensor, and a 4 way mirror slots over it.
The wiring is just the three pins that go onto a pcb, and then onto prongs that form the plug that slot into the socket on the tank.
I fired my HL at the Elmod and it recorded a hit, though this was at short range. I will test it at longer range to see if it still detects, and on a Tamiya when I get the chance. If the longer range does not work, then I can try a more powerful IR emitter on the HL, and different resistors until I get a decent compatible gun.
The HL IR detector 'might' be a simple sensor swap. Dave/Darkith mentioned some time ago that putting one of his sensors (TSOP4838) into the HL tower might solve it. The Elmod uses TSOP1738 plus a low pass RC filter 47 ohm/22uF.
The gun problem to solve is frequency. The Tamiya tower requires a detect rate of 3 out of every 50 pulses (I think).
So, as it will cost next to nothing to try this, I want to fit a TSOP4838 into the HL tower. The problem is that the pin-outs are unknown as I don't know which IR sensor Heng Long have used.
The TSOP1738 is Gnd, 5v, Out
The TSOP4838 is Out, Gnd, 5v
Does anyone know what the Heng long is? Pic is attached.

can you see any part numbers rob?
when i tried to figure the h/long fets on the rx18 boards it looks to me like they have there own bespoke electronics parts as i couldnt find any reference to them :-[
have e-mailed a link to this thread to my dad who may have an idea

Hi Here is a photo of wiring diagram for the bsu rx18 top right hand corner shows the battle unit wiring .
its posible for heng long to register hits at close range but the emmiter may not be correct freq it should be 38khz
regards pete
P.s you can also use these but make sure you wire the pins correctly I have used these but the pin out is different to Darkiths units

Re: Any electronics whizzes out there?
Thanks Pete, that schematic is just what I wanted. It shows the HL pin outs. I will get hold of some TSOP4838's as that is what Dave/Darkith uses and his are 38khz.
It will cost peanuts to try it and it is reversible if it doesn't work. I will also try the TSOP1738's as I already have some.
The emitter should work using http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=2253 and a resistor.
The Elmod mushroom will detect hits from the HL emitter up to 10 feet indoors.
Cheers

Hi Have used those emmitters they work with with the DBC,keep us posted ,I think you will need a BSU to make it work at normal ranges plus these mods.

does this help?

Re: Any electronics whizzes out there?
Yes, that's the ones I have from the schematic. I can only source the TSOP4838's from Rapid Electronics, and although they are only 50p each, they want £5 postage. At that rate it is cheaper to buy a BSU and 'know' that it will work. Where do I find the guy that makes them?
I am wondering if anyone else has tried simply swapping the sensor on the HL mushroom?
