So... an update. Had other things to deal with so it sat for a bit. I got another project, a Leopard A4, and downloaded the manual. That manual has a little better description of the gearbox and functions. I didn't realize there was a brake function incorporated as well. The friction disks (cork) were oil soaked, and I made new out of gasket material. I also set some slight play in the clutch shaft.

Success! Drives and turns! Installed the Schumo-kit slack adjuster and it runs very well now. Now, I get to disassemble it all again! and paint the tub and suspension... Ah well.
