RC Tank Warfare community hobby forum

Hello! I’m new to this forum, but not new to RC tanks. I have an old Tamiya Tiger that I bought used 12 years ago. I was actively IR battling with the AZ DAK club back in 2010/2011. The previous owner IR battled with it in 2008/2009 at the AAF Tank Museum in Danville, Virginia.

I took a long hiatus from the hobby and now I’m returning to it.. Trying to get up to speed with the changes that have occurred in the hobby over the past decade.

Hello, oh warm one, from a still-frozen colonial in northland Wisconsin. Of late, it seems, we North American tankers are coming out of the woodwork. Your veteran Tamiya Tiger that has done what I would enjoy: seeing the Danville Museum and having a bit of fun. Great!

In the last ten years, Tamiya- which once ruled the roost, is now facing stiff competition from the likes of Heng Long (vastly improved electronics, and add ons) and Taigen (improved electronics and sound effects). All in all, there are many more options for packing the house out with interesting WW2 and modern tanks, whilst emptying your bank balance. Most are battlers; some are BB and IR capable, and some even produce barrel smoke these days- and for which you can even pick your own smoke flavour.

Welcome from Southern Illinois! I’ve worked short term at Prescott, Yuma and Kingman for our therapy company. Always thought the terrain out there would be great for rc tank play. Except for the mean Mojave green rattlesnakes!

I was shocked to find that all but two of Tamiya’s World War II full option tank kits have been discontinued, which makes me sad..

When I was last active in this hobby Heng Long tanks were laughably bad. I saw a recent review on their latest KV-2 with version 7 electronics. It didn’t look much better and sounded like an Abrams with turbine engine. The reviewer said version 7 was a downgrade from their previous stuff and that Heng Long is ignoring what their customers ask for. Taigen look to be better built, from a mechanical construction standpoint, but I imagine the metal used is of the cheapest pot metal they can source. I’ve been told Taigen electronics are worse than Heng Long.

Someone else recently referred to Tamiya DMD/MF units as “crappy” electronics.. Really??!! I hope their idea of “good” electronics is not in that KV-2 I saw.

My mother lives in Prescott. I am going up there this weekend! The DAK club based their logo on the Afrika Korps emblem, kind of appropriate for our environment here. Though, some places like Prescott don’t look like a desert at all.

Müncheberg is my Tiger’s division, April 1945. According to Putin, it is now April 1945, again, this time in Kyiv.

As to the drawdown of Tamiya's 1/16 rc kits, I regret it but in truth I am not surprised, It is a specialised market, The Tiger 1 will always be in demand but the Panzer 4 which was the mainstay of German armour throughout WW2 less so and with the "definative" PZ4 Turret by Taigen the reason for paying £900 for a PZ4 kit versus £350 for a RTR from Heng Long/Taigen has greatly diminished.
The market for the Panther and the Sherman has been pretty much saturated by much cheaper multi variants from the two Chinese companies so nothing there for Tamiya, But there is a market for the Centurion (Something we have been saying for years ) and the Leo and Abrams so that is where the profit lies.
