Metal Supplies

Post by MikeHamilton »

I've read and re-read Dr Phebes' excellent run through on upgrading his King Tiger :

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=19531

And was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on suppliers of small quantities of aluminium rectangular rod, aluminium tubing and "L" section bracing? I've had a look at various model making web sites and what they tend to supply is fairly thin stuff, whereas it looks as if Dr Phebes used quite heavyweight stuff.

I'm still awaiting delivery of my King Tiger from Dave at Forgebear as he's been hospitalised (again), which Julie mentioned in the email conversation I had with her yesterday, and it would be nice to have the supplies here ready to crack on with the strengthening once I receive the model.

Thank you

Don't look on model making sites, look on home improvement shops. I've made my Jagdtiger reinforcement using typical aluminum profiles.

Or just Google aluminium local to me and you should get a couple of results.

Always take a model with you. The owner will enjoy your visit, get caught up in your 'problems' and really get involved in helping both on what you need and what it will cost! Don't be afraid to ask for sheets etc to be cut and or folded as they will want to impress you with their skills too.

Be prepared to return with your finished model to show them how their parts contributed. It's an investment for when you need them again! I now have two local stockists who l now consider mates who are always ready to help, one a custom fabricating specialist and the other a huge industrial stockist who loves toys!

For a lot of my projects I looked on ebay to buy alloy sheet and section.

And, if you ever want sheet aluminum, check second-hand shops for baking sheets. They're usually between 1mm and 2mm thick, and can be used to strengthen hulls, etc., (and they're cheap). Alpha taught me that one.
