RC Tank Warfare community hobby forum

Hello all,

I have not yet bought a Tank but am very interested in buying a Challenger 2. (Partly to keep indoctrinating the kids into Tanks so I have an excuse to visit the Tank museum etc!!)

I have found this forum in the hope of tapping into the advice of those who have experience and knowledge of all thing R/C and Tanks!!!

Welcome, Andy. By "the Tank museum" do you mean Bovington? or one of the others? As for a first tank, that Challenger 2 might be a good idea! You are going to get all kinds of advice. In fact, maybe someone on here can advise which version of the Challenger will get you the best start. Enjoy it! On this forum, you will see all kinds of magic done to stock RC tanks, but don't let it intimidate you. Above all, ask questions and have fun!

Thanks. Yes, the Tank Museum in Bovington. Luckily I only live a couple of hours away from it.

Welcome to the Forum. You'll find all sorts of info, advice, inspiration, and ideas here. The quality of work of many of these guys is mind blowing! It never fails to amaze me!

You chaps who live "across the pond' are very lucky! I'd love to see the Tank Museum at Bovington and the Imperial War Museum, just to name a few places. Maybe some day I'll get the chance.

Yes, you are right about the forum. The level of advice I have received already has been brilliant.

The tank museum is a unique place that caters not only for the enthusiast, but the general public as well. The work they have done and the improvements they keep making since I first visited in 1984 ish are spectacular.
If do ever get the chance to visit, time it for Tankfest. (When we have some normality back) Its well worth the admission price

Hi Andy, welcome aboard. My 2 kids were brought up in the tank museum and being towed around Poole Harbour on sail boards. Best part of the country!

The Chally 2 comes in several forms as it evolved over its service and most of those variants are available through small 3D printing businesses, most of the UK ones residents of this forum. It's a large model in 1/16 which means you will have space inside to add working functions or your own mods. I have purchased two Henglong examples with version 6.0S electronics which give superb driving characteristics and both BB and IR battle as standard with extras such as 360 turret rotation, barrel flash and recoil etc available as extras on purchase or fitting later. Taigen and Torro also produce their models at a higher cost but if you like metal tracks etc they are worth considering too. Here are a couple of mine to tease you, a stock HL desert camo and a current type in british NATO green, as can be seen at Bovington in service.

Thanks for the post and the info on the Challengers. You have clearly expended some time and skill in making those. Just out of interest, what sort of paint to use on the idlers and sprockets?

I just about remember Lulworth cove as a nipper when my Father was posted at Bovington before being re posted. Lovely part of the country, but way too popular these days.
I was also fortunate enough to have spent some of my summer holidays as a kid going into work with my Father who was 4RTR at the time and playing on and in the tanks in the "tank hangers". This was back in the day before health and safety!!
I can vividly remember running for cover and hiding when the Chieftain was started up in the hanger. The noise to a 6ish year old was incredible.

Looking back now I appreciate what a privilege it was to have that as part of my childhood memories.

This is where my interest in Tanks has come from and hence indoctrinating the kids as much as I can!!!

P.S Love the sound of a Chieftain now!!

I use Halfords rattle can grey primer for metal or plastics, as appropriate, and then Tamiya acrylics for top coats. I generally use a ratle can for the main colour and then airbrush any other top colours. Try both satin and flat colours as both can work well. Once dry, l often use a very thinned matt Humbrol enamel wash to pick out the joins etc. as l like only the faintest weathering effect. You'll never see rust on my tanks!
