No, I wouldn’t try to use my old 1/87 scale for an rc project. I want to scratch build a bigger one.

Jim, you're a constant source of pleasant surprises  That's a truly lovely looking model. As for the propulsion side of things, Tom (Hugill) might be the person to offer a few tips, as he's had quite a bit of experience with powering and steering U-Boats. Yes, yes.. I know you don't want your vessel to sink :O ...but the surface propulsion and rudder arrangements would be pretty comparable, and thus relevant. :problem: :D

Thanks, I’ll give him a holler. My preliminary thoughts are going 1:48 scale which yields a model 3’ 7” long by a foot wide. I’m thinking about using foam construction board for the flat hull to cut down on weight. I’ll add lead weight later to adjust its ride height.
I only live about an hour from where 3 of the 7 City Class gunboats were made, Mound City, Illinois. It would be cool to eventually photograph this in its birthplace.

Just a quick update. I’m slowly receiving the electronics needed for my ironclad. 2 waterproof esc units 1 of two motors and a DasMikro. I’m still waiting for the other motor and a pair of gear reduction mounts. Still need to order the propeller shaft units and steering servos. Soon I’ll begin the hull construction. Just wanted to let you all know that I am moving forwarding this project.

Stuff is beginning to trickle in. Today I received the gear reduction motor cradles. Good thing this boat will be big because this stuff is getting heavy! I still need to order propellers shafts and rudder components/servos.

Well, so long as it's not water, Jim. :D

Incidentally, quite by chance, I was listening to a radio feature on Scotch whisky exports, when I learned that the Yanks had imposed a 25% import duty tariff on single-malt Scottish Whisky, back in 2019 :O Oh, the horror. Just how cruel and philistine is that!. Now, with the Covid horror, they could at least do the decent thing and drop the surcharge, and allow those needy palates to taste real nectar. :D

Now, back from the booze bulletin to the boat.
