I am making a Tami 1/16 Pershing, and soon will need an RC transmitter/ receiver for it.
I have acquired a large collection of RC models recently, tanks, boats and planes. Among them was a transmitter / receiver unit . Futaba 6 EXA. 6 channel unit, with the receiver . Although primarily an aircraft unit,It works fine on a model boat I have.
Can this be used for my Pershing?
The only difference I can see is that the throttle, it is ( or can be ) centre off and is the left stick, not the right, and it is non spring to centre, notch type control.
The functions indicated in the manual are
1, aileron 2. elevator 3 throttle 4 rudder, 5 landing gear, 6 flaps
I guess these functions are useable for left right, barrel , turret, mg etc
Has anybody got and ideas, if not suggestions for a low cost system to buy.

The Futaba will be fine but you will find the lack of return spring annoying.

I drive my Tamiya’s as per the manual.

Left stick throttle and turret rotation.

Right stick elevation and steering.

Functions are enabled by the trims on basic radios and on fancy radios by adjusting travel of the sticks or fire switches.

Futaba do an inexpensive 2.4ghz 4 channel radio with receiver for £60 or so should you wish for a radio just for the tank.

That’s great, thank you. Yes I figured throttle might be a pain, great for the boat, but! I really want to be talked into a specific control. But you end up with so many. Every Hen Long comes with another 1, and I’ve got 4 now. I got this job lot from a guy who’s giving up on RC so bought the lot. 3 Tiger 1,s plus an unmade Tami Tiger 1 in its box untouched. It’s up on e bay at present cos I don’t want another Tiger, anything else I’d consider,
Good luck on the jeep, I only did mine so quick because I bought it early 1994, and was determined to run it in time for the big 50 d day events. I just didn’t quite make it! But as there were so many events that year, ran in in some later ones.

If you switch the tx between Mode 1 and 2, you can run a Tamiya tank in Heng Long mode, eg throttle on the right. I did this on the Tamiya tanks that I owned in the past.

Thank you for your reply Wibbly Wobbly, Yates my Futaba has 4 modes, and it seems can be changed to other modes to suit tanks. Quite how the MG fire and shoot function will work, I don’t know, but the basic controls seem straightforward.

With regards the Futaba 6 EX , it works fine, but having digital trim controls makes if fiddly to operate other functions, like main fire, mg or idle on off.
Also as mentioned the non return throttle is annoying if not dangerous, ie moving off when not required. I think I will take the earlier advice and get a dedicated control for it. It would be easier if all the tanks I have work the same way. Started the HL StuG up yesterday and nearly shot it off the table, pressing wrong control.
1 question I have, to fire the Tamiya etc will I still have to use the trim controls or could there be a dedicated button, like the Heng Long

If you are electric savvy you can wire in fire switches to a radio with manual trims

you would need to bust open the radio and wire in a switch yourself if you want a fire button. Unfortunately the only site I know of that had a tutorial I know of went off line a while back.

As for curing the non-return, centering spring kits do exist for the 6EX:
