Made a start on my Abrams. Which will never be in the same league as Barry C’s
First, this really annoyed me.

Decided to make some new tow ropes and to attach them in a more realistic fashion.

Made some new handles. Slight improvement. I just don’t have the patience or any clear pictures. May have a go at something better.

Thank you Barry. It was reading your post that gave me the inspiration to start. I am new to this 1/16 dc modelling, so will be referring to your build, in the hope of producing a stand off scale model. One that looks good from 3m.

It's just a matter of doing it. You will make a few mistakes along the way but it will be a learning experience. Those experiences serve to make you a better modeler.

I have a number of 1st and 2nd failures for many of the parts I've made for my Abrams. ;)

Going from no real idea of what I wanted to do on this, so I was jumping from one job to another, with out really doing anything successfully, and I was doing more damage. I sat down and formulated a plan Over the week. I got my big boy pants on, hid the whisky, re-read Barry’s post, and took the tank apart to make working on it easier. I have unashamedly stolen Ideas. I want 360 rotation of the turret, take out the BB mechanism, replace as much moulded details with wire where possible. Managed to get a bit done on some small details.
Advice on a slip ring, is there a plug and play one I could use, or will I have to do lots of soldering?

Looking good so far.

I'm not sure I would put the "Whisky" away just yet! ;)

Being a complete numpty. I am trying to work out how the loaders hatch mechanism works that hold it open. Can anyone explain, and have any clear photos. If I can understand how it works I can have a go at making it.
Thanks in advance, Ian.

Hi Ian,

Here are drawings of 3 different types of latches used on the M1A1 and A2.

Here is how one of them works. Notice it is different from those in the above drawing.

Your build has spiked my interest because sometime in the New Year after I have finished accruing the fixtures and fittings ready for my V6.0 Heng Long Abrams build I shall have learnt how easy a build this is obviuosly going to be :lolno:
Don't forget if you are going to change your 320 for a 360 that the 1/16 Abrams and Challenger use the larger of the two available pre-slotted 360 Turret Rings,
Taigen sell a prewired 360 turret wiring loom which clips into the slot of the turret ring BUT I have yet to discover if it works with the revised Heng Long Wiring of the V6.0.
I am enjoying your progress
