M16 Half Track "Meat Chopper" Korea 1950 - Build

This section is for builds that are not strictly Tamiya or Heng Long. For instance, replacing the electronics from a WSN or Matorro, or even a scratch-build.

Now, the gun mount. The use of Tamiya M2 with brass barrels with Fibre optics really makes a difference compared to the original WSN guns.

This is supposed to be a Korean war vehicle in a winter setting, not Okinawa in summer time... The figures will be in winter uniforms. Although i gave the vehicle some basic winter and wet grime effect, it needs more. I ordered 1 month ago this Vallejo Snow texture. The shipment is still in transit. I intend on experimenting a bit first before trying to apply this over exposed areas of the M16, see what it does. I am also waiting for most figures to arrive so the following steps will need to wait a bit.

With each of your builds, I grow more and more convinced that you own both a time machine and some form of shrink ray, and in fact these are not models, rather the real thing..

Amazing work! Will you be doing snow effects, or a whitewash?

Thank you PershingLover and Barry,
I will try to represent snow on the vehicle as seen below, something i have never done before. I won't be snow storm but at least some accumulated snow in low areas. It will change the look and feel.

Of special interest for those who want to rebuild their M16. I just got this week the Classy Hobby M5A1 Stuart tank in 1/16 scale. Closer inspection show something very useful for the future that i was not expecting.

A US WW2/Korea tank radio in 1/16 scale ! Yeah

It's the type with 2 receivers and comes with the base. This is a first in 1/16 scale. If i had known, i would have been able to use it when the plan is to convert the M5A1 for RC and detailed interior becomes redundant.

It seems perfect for the Torro and WSN M16, and well detailed.

Also of interest to modellers is that the kit comes with a fully detailed turret interior, basket and everything, including the 37mm M3 gun. I can see a lot of use for this gun in 1/16 modelling because it was installed in many WW2 vehicle.

Hi Louis,

I also have the M5A1, actually I purchased two of them with the plan to convert one to a M4 High Speed Tractor. My dad was in Field Artillery and his crew operated a 155mm Howitzer towed by a M4 Tractor.

Good to know about the Radio set as my interior will become extra as well and save me some work on my M16.

I will be very interested in your thoughts on how you plan to power it up when you get around to it.

Hi Barry
We do seem to have the same taste in tanks. Got two M5A1 for exactly same purpose. This kit is full of standard US equipment for a builder’s spare box that are costly when found individually. In addition to the complete 37mm gun and US tank radio, it has a 3 complete M1919 machine guns with ammo box and different mounts, a full set of tools with PE attachments, a Culin hedgerow cutter, 16 US periscopes with mounts and guards, tie downs, head and tail lights, horn, search light, fuel caps, tow hook, turret seats and lots of other stuff in addition to individual track links, ice cleats, wheels, etc. Only missing crew and personal equipments really. I can see myself buying more just for equipment.

I’ve given it a good look, conversion to RC is possible and seems not too complicated. Gearbox already on order. I’ll start it in a few weeks.

Louis,

What gearbox did you order?

Mato panzer III MT197, it almost slides right in. I only have a right gearbox for tests, but it only needed some grinding of the front inside armor for the last gear to determine its a good potential for integration. To fit properly and give the last gear some room to spin, i will need to grind one more mm all the way through and apply a plasticard sheet on the outside. Height seems good for left side. I like the Mato gearbox because the main shaft can be easily removed, reworked and put back. But i am not recommending it yet until i have installed it and worked out the integration, seen the behavior with the suspension, tracks and what reinforcement is required. But that will be a story for another build.

Nice find , perhaps this is the start of 1/16 static kits expanding the list of models . Good to see others offering kits, Trumpeter kits with interiors are expensive but they have scale parts with great detail. Building one slowly as i am casting useful parts for RC tanks, and as 1/35 are getting over the top parts wise us older builders find the 1/16 kit is easier on the eyes.

Hi,

Here is a short post for the M16 gunner.

I received this figure today from eBay China, a 1/16 resin US soldier with little girl, about $22 with free shipping.

Dremel time. To fit the M45 quadmount limited gunner seating space, minor adjustments are required. Need to give his back a slope matching the quadmount seat inclination, cut a bit of the feet and calves to fit in. The left arm, freed of the little girl, is repositioned towards the inside. Residual resin pieces are cut and put into the gap with superglue, then sanded.

He looks pretty comfortable in his gunner's seat.

Repositioning of the frontal quadmount armor. The gunner is properly looking into the sight.

Here we go, from a little girl kisser to a mean M45 meat chopper quadmount gunner in the M16 crew. His face is correctly oriented towards the ground for the massacre. Just need to check that the gun elevation is still ok with the figure in place. Painting will wait for the other figures to arrive.
