So given England has returned to its normal summer weather program of Yet More Rain i am wondering just how resistant RC tanks are to the wet stuff.

Will a little surface water on grass be an issue for the electronics?

Many years ago I was given the job of driving a civilian electrical engineer around RAF Changi (Now Singapore International Airport) in a flash flood in the middle of the night inspecting electrical sub stations,
Without exception they were all under many feet of water and the engineer in thick rubber wellies and thick rubber gloves would open the access doors to them to check them out.
The interior would be glowing with a brightness that hurt my eyes,
He would clean the rubber seals around the doors and lock them shut saying "Okay lets go to the next one" .
I was astounded fully expecting lots of flashes and bangs but he was completely unfazed,
He was more worried about the likely ingress of vegetation and insects not water.
Yes water will get in a Tank but as long as you dry everything afterwards and don't try fording deep water you should be fine.

The low voltage electrical systems cope well with damp but the metals within them and the running gear deal less well as corrosion sets in over the days following the damp running. So long as the tank is opened up and thoroughly dried and relubed then all should be okay but if you can't be bothered with that sort of maintenance then it's best to run only when it's dry.

I always keep mine out of the water. Period. But, those brushed motors will actually run underwater, it's the electronics that you have to be careful of. If you waterproof all your electronics you'll be fine in water, but like they've said above, make sure you dry everything off and relube after you run it. Your best bet is to just stay out of the water.

From experience with your standard British summer wet grass is a common thing.

The answer to your question is. Yes they will run on bowling green short wet/damp grass with no issues any longer and it will start to get into the battery bay after a while. Better still fake grass. I would advise against any form of puddles Unless you want to carry out the maintenance everyone has already stated and for light drizzle again not such a good idea. Things like engine grills or opening hatches will let water in.

Wet or dry Long Grass will kill the transmission on a Tank,
It will wrap itself around the sprockets and stall the motors causing an overload with all the expense that only your pocket book can repair.

There are far too many examples of expensive damage caused by driving a 1/16 Tank in long grass to ignore,

Yes when we do these shows I peg some cord carpet down. Green of corse and unbacked so if it rains it soaks through That way we can run the tanks as requested by the organisers with out risking killing the tanks.

Naturally we won’t run whilst it’s raining but damp carpet is better than wet grass

This thread got me to thinking. Before I started upgrading my HL Tiger I’s electronics I drove through snow, water and all kinds of outdoor flora. Now I’m more careful with it but if I desired to drive like a beast again I would get another Heng Long Tiger, leave it completely stock and drive the sh#* out of it. Just one guy’s rc tank journey (so far).
