Servo help.

Morning all,

I'm working on a little project and have run into a problem while fitting the servo. As can be seen from the pics below the servo sits directly in front of the motor and this is what is causing the problem, while the motor is spinning it interferes with the servo which moves erratically because of the magnetic pulse from the motor. I would like to keep the servo where it is as it fits neatly and it would be a real pain to move elsewhere and connect it to the steering. I would be grateful if anyone has any info on how I could possibly get around this problem :thumbup:

Are you sure its EM interference and not just a case of cheap servo jitters?

Hi Tiger6

I've tried multiple servos and all are the same, if I move the servo away from the motor even by about 20mm it works fine but unfortunately I don't have the luxury of space to fit it further away than where it is situated in the pics :'( I tried placing a piece of styrene sheet and even an aluminium plate between them but it still acts the same when it is in close proximity to the motor, I'm using a mini servo and it doesn't just jitter it tries to spin itself around :crazy: :thumbup:

Well if you can't move the motor away, about the only thing I can suggest is a ferrite bead around the servo cable?

If that doesn't fix it the I think you are stuffed - there is no kind of shielding that you can fit in the available space that will shut out interference directly from the motor itself.

If you have one of thoe metalised bag that electronic part usually come in, it might be worth trying with that fitted over the servo. It should form a Faraday shield. A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure used to block electromagnetic fields. A Faraday shield may be formed by a continuous covering of conductive material, or in the case of a Faraday cage, by a mesh of such materials.

The old fashioned way is to solder a capacitor across the terminals to the electric motor. I've done this with several motors and works every time. I just start with the smallest and go on to the next size until problem solved. Cheap and easy fix.

Thank you for all the info guys :D I think I've got it sussed now, after Tiger6 mentioned about using cheap servos I had a thought ( unusual for me :haha: ) up until that point I had tried named brands such as turnigy and emax but these were reacting the same, then out of curiosity I tried a cheap Chinese knock off servo that I had and lo and behold it works perfect :crazy: sometimes basic and cheap may just work :D :thumbup:
