Its me again, sorry for yet another maybe silly question

Anyway, I see there are different types of gears/motors. I see there is a manufacturer, DKLM RC that do the Steal gearbox and motors
for different RC tank models. Are these upgrades to the standard stock g/boxes (like the Torro Pro metal) in the Tiger 1 for example worth
the upgrade?

Honestly I would say not, the DKLM stuff is very nice, but also very pricy and you'll need aftermarket electronics that understands how to talk to them (they aren't one motor per track like the regular ones). For a regular HL/Torro/Taigen I'd just stop at the black steel ones for now, they are plenty smooth and robust and the scale speed shouldn't be so far off that you are going to notice.

If I was doing a modern tank and I was willing to spend a lot of money on it, the the DKLM's would be good. But in your shoes I'd recommend coming up to the club, seeing what the other members have got, and then decide what it is that you really want. All too many folks come piling into the hobby, read a bunch of threads where experinced builders have spent a fortune on a perfect model, try to emulate them, but end up with something that doesn't meet their (probably unrealistic to begin with) expectations..

I totally agree with tiger six. I really like the black steel ball-bearing gearboxes that come stock in a lot of the tanks now. Plenty smooth and about as close to bulletproof as we're likely to get. The version before that, with bushings for the gear shafts and bearings on the axleshaft, were also great gearboxes. Adding the bearings made them a little bit better and I'm glad to see them, but they were pretty much fine beforehand.

There are some very cool gear boxes out there if you're willing to spend the money but I just don't see the need. I'd rather spend the extra money on better Electronics.

The DKLM PDSGB is a lovely piece of kit but can't be run on a standard HL control board - I have mine run through a TK60. Also, you may struggle to make the standard plastic hull rigid enough to make full use of the gearbox as they are capable of producing some serious torque/speed!

That said, they are lovely - I have mine in a DKLM metal hull & running gear - much quieter, roomier and a lot faster than standard (the 3s lipo may help!!)
