Today I received a 2.54 JST connector kit for 2, 3, 4 and 5 pin connectors.

It has surface mount sockets, and make up yourself plugs. And two metal strips of crimp connections.

But on closer inspection, the two metal strips are different.

My question is, have I been given a wrong strip or is there another way of using these connectors I'm not thinking of, or should I have had two strips the same as the top strip in the last picture? Am I missing something?

Apparently I should have received both types of strip.

But I still don't get why?

I also got these, but they didn't come with the pin type strips.

What do you use to crimp pins that small? I don't think any of my crimping tools will handle them.

Small long nose pliers, but I will also solder them.

The other complete kit doesn't come with the pin connections. They are the same type of connectors, just smaller.

You can get a crimping tool from HobbyKing for under $15. That's what I use and it works just great. I used to use Mick's method of soldering and crimping with pliers but since I got the crimpers all my connections look as good as if they came out of the factory.

The video's a tad blurry, and the demonstrator's mildly short on charisma, but there's still some useful info here.

Plenty of JST crimping tools on Ebay and Amazon from £8.99- £40. The iwiss model he's blurring out here is £18.99 on Amazon.

I will have a look thanks. The last time I needed JST connectors I bought extension leads with the plugs & sockets already installed & I soldered & heat shrinked them together as I didn't fancy crimping such small connectors.
