Problem painting PE grills

I've got the PE grills for the engine deck of my jagdpanther.
The problem is I can't find a way of painting them without the risk of ruining them.
If the paint isn't thinned enough it clogs the tiny holes, and if it is thinned enough it just disappears!
Has anyone got any hints or advice on how tackle this?

Thanks
John

Hi Iain,

I didn't prime them as I didn't want the tiny holes in the mesh to get clogged.
I'll give it a go today though.

Thanks
John

Hi the way I do it is prime paint red oxide (halfords)but spray them from a distance of at least 12"or more do a very light coat then blow the mesh to make sure all the mesh is clear while the paint is wet from the direction that shows dont worry to much about the side that dosnt show.after drying you can use the thinned paint  again in light coats and blow after each coat.

I didnt prime mine when i put the grills on to my StuG and the Humbrol acrylic spray went down fine without any clogging. I did give the brass a gental rubbing with some fine wet n dry first to help key the surface though.
