I was thinking about getting one of the new Taigen radio sets to use in my Big Wind, (Yes, it is almost completed!) but I had a couple of questions to clarify before I ordered one. I didn't see a Taigen section, so I'll post here in the general questions. If this needs to be moved, please do so.

First, Does it bind to the hobby transmitter, or do you have to use jumper cables between the hobby receiver and the Taigen receiver?

Second, if it does bind to the transmitter, can you select the functions for the sticks?

My plan is, if it will work, is to use the hobby receiver and an 11 volt pack to control and power the ducted fan jet engines, and the Taigen receiver and a 7.2 volt stick pack to power the rest of the tank functions.

You still need the receiver from the radio. They make a set of cables that runs from the mfu to the receiver, but I don't know if they come with the system or if you have to buy them separately. This is just a personal opinion, but I think you'd be much better off spending your money on an IBU or even a Clark tk22. The Taigen electronics can't really be adjusted or programmed, and one thing I didn't like is that you'll lose the machine gun if you go to a hobby grade radio.

Looks like that might be my only option. I'm trying to get it all to run on one transmitter, with 2 separate power supplies. I haven't really used any of the control boards, do they still need the hobby receiver to work?

Yeah, all the tank control boards still need the receiver that comes with the radio. For something as complex as you have in mind you might want to look into the TCB and the open Panzer project. The TCB is probably the most versatile board out there. There are other boards that are just great, like the IBU and the Clark, but the TCB is the most versatile by far. You can do things with the TCB that no other control board can do.

Why do you need two separate power supplies? If you're thinking you need one for the receiver that's not the case. All of the tank Boards out today provide power to the receiver at 5 volts, no matter what voltage your battery is.

What voltage do the ducted fans run on? Both the IBU and the TCB can handle 12 volts, so if a 3S lipo will run your fans you can also use it for the board.

Thanks for all the info. Right now I've got a HL dual sound MFU in it for the tank bits, with the hobby receiver, dual speed controllers and an 11 volt Lipo running the fans. I'm thinking for me the best bet is the Taigen MFU. All I'll need is another receiver to run the Taigen unit and all should work as planned. I can run it as it, but it's really a pain having to use 2 transmitters. Since there is no MG on Big Wind, I'm not really losing anything by going that route.

The only hitch I seem to have hit is that my radio system is older and Hobby King doesn't have any receivers that will work with it. I guess that the fix will be to upgrade to a newer radio. I'll still be able to use the older one in something else as it is in great shape. If anyone has an older Hobby King receiver laying around that would work with the HK6X, I'd be interested!
