They are door retaining catches for when the machine is in motion with doors open.

Think Your correct on the positioning of that door retainer it certainly does look to be set to low compared to this picture of a real Pz III

A lot of us will now be wielding craft knives chopping off the wrongly placed door retainer and fixing it in its correct position,
