Top layer printed, just the commanders cupola to print, it looks like something out of star wars.

removed the opening for the gun

I needed access to the turret so I have carried out surgery on the top to create a removable panel, I'll need to use magnets to fasten it down
Image

I'm just printing a spacer for the turret mounting so it will fit a standard Heng Long turret ring

Bloody hell you’ve been busy Alwyn!
Good idea with the removable top section.

Yup busy, busy, busy. Printed the mounting ring to convert to small Heng Long turret ring

and mated to the ring

Next I've got to sort out the barrel mounting and print the barrel before closing up the turret.

Don't you just love it when a printer actually prints parts that fit together in the way that you designed them? :D

Thanks everyone for the comments, yes Rob it's awesome when the bits you design actually come together and fit. I sometimes think back to the hours spent working with sheet and tube styrene to create some fancy bit of a model, and now with a bit of creative thought and finessing it's straight from the computer screen to printer and Bob's your uncle! - simply awesome. :D :D

And talking about awesome, look what I found on evilbay from Haya
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Heng-Long-ch ... 2749.l2649

A gun barrel, not a straight fit but with some finessing it will do the trick and all for £12!!!

Plan coming together.
Designed and printed the turret platform for the upper hull (9 hour print)

and here with the turret ring and turret spacer

and here's the turret positioned on the tank

Next job is to work out the barrel mounting, I've ordered a servo recoil and elevation unit from tankbear
https://www.rctankelectronics.com/store ... _Unit.html

I just have to design the mounting to take it inside the turret, which is going to be pretty tight, I might have too modify the recoil unit to get it to fit the confined space.

Well things have been a bit distracted since Friday when SWMBO developed acute pancreatitis and had to be carted off to hospital, but she's now home and on the mend.

So in the meantime I received the servo recoil and elevation kit from tankbear (many thanks Ian).
Image
as you can see I wasted no time in modifying it as the Chieftain turret is a very tight fit for the barrel mounting so minor surgery was required
Image
I also had to design and print a mounting that fitted the standad heng long barrel mount
Image
Image
as you can see - a VERY ight fit

You will need to mirror the fastener in CURA to get both sides.

All I'm waiting for now is the barrel and I can progress with the turret.

Hi Alwyn,
Sad to hear about your Mrs, but glad to hear she’s on the mend
I received my recoil unit in the post today, thanks for the mounts, I’ll get them printed shortly.
Cheers

Finished the design for the front glassis, it took 8 hours and it was a total bitch. Openscad doesn't do organic shapes so it will need filing and some milliput to get the correct shape.

Image

It takes 9 hours to print this and I'm sure it's going to need at least one redesign/reprint, but hey ho, that's one of the joys of scratch building.

The print is running now and it's already three and a half hours in and says it isn't even a quarter of the way done
