I am wondering the best way to represent the glass in tank periscopes, particularly for WW2 German vehicles.

Painless pretty much ran a symposium on periscope glass when he was building his Pershing,
Well worth looking it up in the "Builds Section".

I find black or very dark blue or green with a coat of high gloss lacquer to be quite pleasing

hi chaps
as i'm of the opinion that they were a sort of green... this is how i do them:
use a piece of aluminium foil, as big as you want, and paint the bright part with tamiya X15. Let dry and them cut pieces as you need them. I glue them with a drop of cyanoacrylate.
best regards
