SdKfz 164 Nashorn by Alwyn Turner

This section is for builds that are not strictly Tamiya or Heng Long. For instance, replacing the electronics from a WSN or Matorro, or even a scratch-build.

I've fitted the tracks now. How do I tell if they are too slack? I know about Tigers, but have no idea about a Panzer IV, let alone one that's been extended.

Richard I have very little slack on mine, if I hold my tank in the air, the tracks sag below the centre pf the suspension by only a quarter inch, and that seems to run fine for me.

I think I need to remove one or two links then. My tracks sag considerably more than a quarter of an inch!

For all that there was a huge sag in the tracks, it was only necessary to remove one link. I am just waiting for a few bits to finish off the interior then hopefully, it will become mobile very shortly.

Hi Richard :wave: Currently I'm running the nashorn with plastic tracks and quite a bit of sag and I've never had any issues with them. I've never had a better runner with plastic tracks :thumbup:

The version in the pics(with red primer over grey) was the one in A.P.G. Maryland.
I actually climbed up on the back of this to look into the fighting compartment :shh: :shifty:

Thought to myself at the time how high it was to get into the rear doors............they ALL are high...........Panthers, PzIV's, all of them.
Really a lot higher than makes for what I would call normal access.
Before you all go "put out ya old bast$%^d" it was in 2010 ok !! :/
I jumped off the Panther in Hoffalize's engine deck and just about suffered a prolapse :{

These things are taller than they look.
I reckon the marks on the left side of the A.P.G. version are the remains of some form of door catch that could be operated from the outside if required.
Remember, these machines were supplied with canvas weather covers for inclement conditions, so it would be possible to lock yourself out of at times.
I have seen pics of these with covers............I will look now.

Somewhat late in the day, I have realised that the little elements around the top of the cockpit are for securing the canvas top Herman refers to. I had not appreciated their significance, so now have to retro fit them. :{

After a lot of faffing about with my FlySky-i6X Tx, I have managed to switch it over to s-bus operation and assigned all the channels to the relevant switches. I'm still not sure what buttons I actually pushed to do it, but hopefully, everything will work as it should when all connected up. What it should mean is no fiddling around with the joysticks to find the right position for elevation, lights etc. The joysticks should just control throttle, steering, rotation and elevation. Everything else should be on switches.

I recall climbing up onto the Tiger at Vimoutier, Lord knows how the crews managed it in a hurry, there are no hand holds to get a grip on. Only managed it in the end by using the tracks at the front. You are a looong way up in tank, and getting down again was a nightmare. Thank Christ it wasn't raining!
