Hello Everyone,
I'm Paul from Hinckley, Leicestershire. I'm an elderly chap with a young outlook on life. I've always had an interest in WW2 tanks and I'm trying to make an informed decision as to what to buy - and it seems far from easy! There seems to be endless configurations, pricepoints, options etc. and I fear it will be too easy to buy the wrong thing that I'll later regret. I believe the 1:16 scale is the appropriate size, but make and spec are still vague. What I would ideally like to do is see a number in the flesh rather than look at internet pics, but there doesn't seem to be retail outlets to visit. I wonder if there're any members in the midlands with tanks I could view, or if there are any forthcoming events with tanks on show.

Hello Paul and welcome. I'm from the United States but I'm on here every day and these fellows are truly a wealth of knowledge and information. I've never met a better group of people. Hi, and welcome to the money pit.... The nearest meet is probably in Grantham, on the first Sunday of the month. There's usually a good range of standard & heavily modified tanks, and fairly regular visits from Dave (forgebear on here) who is also a trader.

Pretty much, all the stock tanks come with 2.4GHz radio gear (be careful on ebay incase they're the older ones) and run fine out of the box. Upgrades aren't needed, but may be bought with the tank (ready assembled) or later to do yourself. You will finish up with more than one!

Welcome to the forum from another older member, though I refuse to describe myself as elderly! I took up the hobby a couple of years ago at the age of 68. Be warned it is most addictive. Just look at my signature. Don't be put off though. I don't regret my initial decision, and people here are so friendly and helpful. Any questions you have just ask.

Hello both, thanks for your welcomes which are encouraging to read - apart from the money pit bit!. The comment re the Grantham meet sounds just what my brother and I are looking for, if place, date and time can be confirmed we will almost certainly attend. We are currently mulling over/discussing the merits of Heng Long/Taigen/Torro offerings, plastic/some metal/all metal construction, and bb/bb paintball/IR battle modes. The tanks catching attention are Tiger/King Tiger/Panther G and we are keen to achieve as far as possible realistic scale speeds and we are aware that 3/4/5:1 gearboxes are options. As I said previously there's a lot to consider and seeing tanks in the flesh and speaking with owners is our next step.

Basic advice would be to decide on a tank(ha!, lads I bet he thinks he's going to stop at one eh ) that you can buy parts/spares for to upgrade until you get it the way you want it.
There are not many WW2 Allied options to choose from, and I see you are already leaning toward the bad-guy side.
Tiger 1 i\has the most parts/upgrade option, followed by the Panther, then King Tiger.
