Yes, simple coat of varnish will do the trick...

By all means seal the wood , but I'd also recommend using a 'release agent' - I have used Vaseline warmed until thin and brushed on , any traces can be washed off with soapy water before glue/painting . B.

I've made a few boat hulls from fibreglass in the past, and I used a good quality caranuba wax that work used to import from America, made a good release agent, and while it wouldn't matter for what you want, it left the gelcoat on the external surface of the hull lovely and glossy.

Hopefully in the next few weeks/months there'll be a Tiger I propelled paddle landing craft appearing in the RC Boat section...
If you're ever up this way and in need of moulding materials, let me know, we make all that stuff at work, as well as very good glue, can get hold of small quantities of most things...

I used to make my own wood filler with dope and talc . It dries fast and sands easily .
