Hi fellas, I am doing a little reasarch , I have the DGS Resin M10 wolverine kit and was thinking of making it an Achilles. From what I have read so far I need to modify the mantlet a little for the 17lbd gun, and I may need to modify the wedge turret weight into a duckbill shape alsoI have seen pics of the Achilles both with appliqué armor mounting bolts and without.
Anyone have any good links to actual photos, or more info ?
Cheers Mark

Hi Mark,

There are examples of the Achilles with the shorter counterweight. Most would have been from the Italian campaign hence the decal sheet we created is mostly orientated that way. My understanding was there were a very few in Normandy and by the mid summer most were now the duckbill version. So technically "out of the box" you would only need to modify the gun mantlet and the barrel counterweight.. :) You have to go deep on Google but there are more images of them out there...

When I was building my M10, I never looked close enough at drawings and pictures of counter weights. I assumed all used the same turret (and was planning a duckbill at the start). THEN I noticed the back of the duck bill turret differed from the others (after my turret was nearly complete). So I ended up with the large wedge counter weight. My rear deck is following the Ford powered M10A1, and as I recall the M10 is using the radial engine and corresponding rear deck. No clue which the Brits used in their 17 pounders, perhaps both.
