Old Tiger 1 upgrade

Well as I explained in my new members post I have had on old HL Tiger 1 given to me a few years ago which was collecting dust.

I have always wanted a Tamia Tiger having seen one in action a few years back but I cannot afford one of those beasties.
Thinking there must be a cheaper route I started researching the net to see what was avilable.  How did we find out anything before the internet.  :o

The first thing I knew I wanted was metal tracks so started on ebay and found this.  :o

It has metal tracks, idlers, drive sprockets, suspension arms, hull stiffeners, barrel and muzzle brake along with an Asiatem recoil unit.  ;D  I think it has had the £199.99 late Tiger conversion kit from Tankzone.

This seemed to ba a good starting point to upgrading and waited expectantly for delivery.  ;D

I will post this now and see if I can get the picture to upload although I am not too hopeful.
I have the picture in the additional options but cannot see it when I do a preview.
Here goes.

you have to use a site like photobucket to insert the picture in the text

like I have done here

Steve this is an example of what can be done feel free to look at the post in a quote to see how to do this

cont....

The ebay Tiger arrived and looked good.  Got it out of the box when the first wheel fell off.  :-X.
I charged the battery and plugged it up.  It moved 2 feet and stopped.
Looked at the axles/road wheels and 7 axels were either loose, screwless or just plain knackered.  >:(.
It had a lot of other problems but in essance I got a lot of metal bits for the price.

Having got a partial refund from the seller I commenced to strip it to the bones.
What a lot of bits. ???

Hi Brel

Do you click the "Insert Image" button or "Insert hyperlink" or just cut and paste your link from your photobucket albulm into the message.

I left click on the link to highlight it and then right click to get the options and then left click copy and then paste the link here in the usual way

if that is an RX13 board in the pile of parts. I would throw it and get either an RX14 or RX18 board for your tiger, they plug into the receiver board the same way as the RX13, but if you go for the RX18 make sure you get one that comes with the wires to connect it to the motors and things

Thanks Brel

Although if their site goes t*ts up or they reconfigure the site you could loose all your photoes.

I had broken springs and cracks appearing in the hull so what to do.

I of course ordered the Asiatem chassis along with an RX18 unit from Welsh Dragon.  ;D

I also ordered 3:1 gearboxes and motors from Tankworkshop.

The left gearbox motor assy does not go straight in as you have to drill through the casing to see the tapped mounting hole.  No sweat  :D.
One thing I don't like is the front mounting holes screw into plastic.  Never a good anchor point material.

The outer sprocket hubs need to be drilled out to 7.2mm (always tripping over drill bits that size) as the new motors come with a 4mm allen key bolt fixing.  The inners I found were a bit tight and I had to jack them on using the afore mentioned allen bolt.  God knows how I will get them off in the future.  Probably have to make some sort of puller.

Managed to get the Zimmerit of the front of the old chassis and glue it onto the new Asiatam chassis.

Got to wait now for the paint to arrive and then I can start with the electrics.

too true Steve too true

OBTW nice start on your tiger, I too bought the aisatam hull for my tiger and had the same problem with one of the gearbox screw holes, I also added a bar between the gearboxes to prevent the flexing the hull as can be seen in this shot

Thanks for the idea of the gearbox bar, I think that's one to go on.

The picture shows what I think is a 5.25" Molex connector for the turret services.  Can you remember the colour coding as it goes in to the 8 way connector.
i.e yellow from turret to pin 4 on 8 way etc.  3 of the wires were off when I got it.  I have 4 wires coming out of the turret. Yellow, red, green and black. Another black and red for the traverse motor are in the upper hull.
I have seen a few diagrames but, (and if the turret is wired as the instructions) none explain what each coloured wire is for.
I have traced all the wires but until I understand what each pin on the RX18 is sending on a particular wire and where that needs to end up on the motors etc I have to guess.

I see you also have an MG fitted. Is that wired into the lights?

Thanks for your patience

Steve

I removed the turret machine gun LED and used the wiring to wire in the hull MG
I wish I could claim credit for the bar between the gearboxes but I can't, I got the idea of another web site
