Logs for the side of my HL Tiger 1

Hope this is the right area (Still learning! sorry if I'm in the wrong section)
Just about to start camo and weathering on my (Still grey) tiger 1
I will want to fit some logs to the hull side, as so many of you have done before.
Silly question.
Can anyone recommend which tree/wood types look the best for scaled down logs with rough bark ?
I can't find anything on the forums to suggest what you guys have used, but some of the Gallery stuff looks spot on.

I cant help ya mate - wrong continent !!
But it really is just a case of trial and bin
Remember though that using a real wood with bark could be affected by the drying out process & look different after a while.
I clear coated mine after it was fully dry to try to keep it as it was.
A bit of paint on it and dirt- spot on.
Unless you can import some branches from eastern Germany or western Russia

go outside look for a twig with the diameter of a penny and job done ! the germans would have done the same as long as it was load bearing. i've heard tales of them cutting down telegraph posts as well.

Hi Gazbo, if you've got a local pound stretcher or similar cheap shop have a look for the cedar log boarder rolls , they are only a couple of quid and you'll have enough scale logs for an entire army I have them on the side of my tiger, and there's that many to a roll you can pick and choose which one's look best

Find a big old silver maple tree. they constantly drop dead branches some of which you will find straight sections of the the diameter your looking for. The bark is thin and smooth so it needs some weathering once dry to look rough.

(I knew I could just go and get something anyway, just wondered which had been the most successful for such things as retaining it's bark etc.)
I do intend to flat-clear them anyway.

PS. I have some ( I think it's called) Birchwood Casey - gunstock stain, which comes out a nice deep brown colour. I might try soaking with that and drying, before the flat clear.
Not in a mad rush, The Tig is in bits awaiting paint at the minute. Its just that with me being an engineer, I have always been taught to do my research - well in advance.
This now gives me time to experiment.
I'll post my findings - with some pics, once I have sorted it.

Lee - the missus is gonna have a look for that cedar roll thing. Excellent idea. Thanks. lateral thinking awards here. (Just hope she doesn't return with the ones with the 1 1/2" diameter logs in ! ---coz that would just look silly - would it not !)

My lad is a tree surgeon. I set him to task. He's come back with a couple of (right-ish diameter) pieces of "Mock-Orange". the bark looks proper scale. (Jus-sayin'). I'll post some pics when I finally get to doing everything.She's presently fully stripped down and all in separate component bags.(re-sealable food bags are ace for this. (Corn flakes cardboard, with sets of screws - pushed in, in order, and labelled up with what they are, order in which they came off, and an arrow with "Tank front". Saves hours trying to sort through a jumble of screws I think !)
