I've read about various options to restrict the speed/acceleration of RC tanks, such as replacing the gears and/or board. Any suggestions for reducing the speed/acceleration of the Taigen KV-1 to something more realistic?

The lower ratio gear boxes is an easy fix..not sure what you have there but the what they call 4:1 gearboxes are slow with good torque.

I'm using the older Taigen brass gear boxes in mine, a big improvement, even on the stock electronics.

Yeah those look better. Mine currently has metal gearboxes (Middle/Low, 3:1, 48mm).

Speed wholly depends on what You are willing to spend.

A taigen 1:5 gearbox paired with some 8500rpm (the 1:5 comes with 22000rpm monsters!) rs380's will be as slow and precise as is possible with the stock electronics. It'll set You back about $60.- or €54.- if You are willing to pull the pinions from the motors, the white nylon/plastic-backed Heng Long motors that came with the plastic geared gearboxes, are, afa I know, the slowest of all the different motors Heng Long uses.

If You're in GB or Europe, You could consider changing the motors for Igarashi 5-poles from Conrad. They run 15000rpm on 12v, and about 9000rpm on 7.2v, and are torque-monsters.

If You're about to go all-out, the IBU-2 has a setting in which the tank will have momentum, and accellerates and brakes like real, 50-tonnes hardware. That way You'll keep the end-speed, but the tank will no longer accellerate like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs..
The Clark TK-22 board has sóme momentum-emulation, but the tank will still accellerate a tad too fast imho.
