Hi can anyone give some advice to what colours the Sherman oil drum and petrol can would have been.

Anything the US produced Was originally olive drab. Both Tamiya and Model Master, Testers, enamal paints in that color would be appropriate. Then pick the amount of wear you want to show on them and go to work to achieve the desired result.
