Hi I would like some help on what paint to use and what tips forum members can give me when painting camo onto my Tiger 1 Tank. This is all new to me and if any guys have pictures of their Tiger 1 Tanks painted would be ideal so I have a better idea of what I should be looking for.

Welcome KJ68, take a look in the show off section to find plenty of painted Tiger 1's.

To answer your question, I use Tamiya paints for all of my tank projects. One tip that I can pass along is to take your time with the camo, sometimes more is not better.

I tend to find a picture of one I like then do a rough copy of it and when I get to the point where I like it I call it job done.
Don't be afraid to just get stuck in as you can always paint over mistakes.

Hi Del I am sorry for all the questions but are you able to pencil the outline of what I would like onto the tank or is it best to draw the outline onto paper. :D

Kevin the "BEST" way to paint a Tank is usually thought to be by using an Airbrush, of course you could use "Rattle Cans" but they do work out as very expensive and then there is the "Hairy Stick",
I generally do a bit of research on a particular Tank then find out what if any markings it wore.
I make my own decals where possible using an Inkjet printer and Decal paper from----
www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk
Camo schemes work best for me if I have a coloured illustration of the Tank in front of me to copy.
If you have fitted metal upgrades you will need to apply a metal primer first and then comes the actual primer,
German Armour of WW2 was painted in Red Primer.
Before you apply any paint you ought to wipe over the whole Tank with ACRYLIC Thinners to get rid of grease and finger prints.
The cheapest way is to go to a car accessory store and buy a 500 ml Aerosol can of "Simoniz Red Oxide Acrylic Primer" for about £5, compare that with the Standard TAMIYA or HUMBROL Aerosol cans of 150 mls for about £8 :lolno: No contest,
I always change the nozzle on the Simoniz can for one from the Tamiya or Humbrol cans for a finer spray.
Most of us use ACRYLICS as a base and topcoat simply because of the ease with which it can be used and its availability. and of course you only need water to clean your Airbrush,
If you are after an affordable Airbrush I recommend ----
www.bartsharp.co.uk
Peddinhaus / Archers and Elite all offer a comprehensive range of decals and can be found with the help of "GOOGLE" or "BING"
I perhaps should add that your HENG LONG/TAIGEN/TORRO Tiger 1 will come with built in faults that can be easily fixed by going to the "TIPS & TRICKS site on the Forum but you might want to do that before painting.
I hope that helps.

Shaun thanks for all the advice mate. I have been looking at the tips and tricks to do with the Tiger 1 and they all seem easy enough to achieve so I think the first thing will be to charge up the battery and make sure my new tank works when she arrives tomorrow then I will start on the tips and tricks job to be carried out then start looking for pictures to achieve the colour I want. Was any of the Tiger 1 tanks painted a grey colour or not. :D

The Tanks used in the Operation Barbarossa campaign in Russia were often painted in grey although many carried various shades and patterns of Camo over the Grey and in Winter they would carry a Whitewash coat over the grey and many having come from or fighting in the Soviet south carried a paler sandy colour similar to the Tiger 1s used in the Tunisian campaign,
But yes plain Grey was a common finish.
If you decide to go with "Rattle Cans" "HUMBROL" sell a TANK GREY But it is far too Blue for my liking conversely they sell a "SEA GREY" number "27" which for a rattle can is not at all bad.
Something worth knowing is that after the Tank was issued to the crew they would have stored away in the Tank, paint and rags or if they were really good scavengers "BRUSHES" and they would apply the Camo in the field, so they were not exactly "SHOWROOM" in their finish. :haha:

Kevin if you scroll down the menu you will get to the reference section, go to "Reference Camo patterns" and then to
"TIGER 1" on to
"Tiger 1 Camo Patterns with > Pictures< by "Dietrich"",
plenty of inspiration to be found there.
