Pinions...rather than 'o'pinions, or even 'e'pinions... : )

HL motors come with 10T pinions (well they are on my Tiger).

Can different sized pinions be fitted as a direct replacement, I am just thinking that the extrernal diameter of the pinion teeth will be smaller on say a 9T, and larger on an 11T.

Has anyone done this?

Hi Wibbly Im sure I have seen on RCU someone who found 8T pinions which gives a 20% reduction to gear ratios but I havnt been able to find any the correct pitch but there must be some out there its just finding them .If you do find any put a post where you found them ,You will have to open the holes up around the motor to allow it to move a little .

Thanks Pete, I knew I had seen something somewhere months ago, but when I looked today I couldn't find it.

I will continue my detective work.

let me know what you think .Do you know the pitch needed .

regards pete

Just a note of caution, HL gearboxes don't have adjustable motor mounts so some modification would be necessary to fit motors with larger/smaller pinions.

I have a pair of 9t pinions, I might try those. Nothing to lose and I might learn something!

Sod's law says that I buy a set of 2x 9t, 10t and 12t pinions and one of the 10t (which is what I need) is squashed at one end?

Will try the 9t and if they line up ok this could be a win, win situation. The RC thread indicates that they might go straight on.

A word of warning to those altering gear ratios.
I put a 3.55-1 reduction motor gearbox in an old tamiya twin clutch Kt chassis- I worked fine until...........

Until I started chewing tracks up then the gearbox.

Basically without being too nerdish you reduce the gear ratio you can increase the torque, can the rest of the drive train take it?.  In my case it couldn't.

I believe some tamiya drivers have have had problems when they have fitted 3-1 reduction gear boxes especially with the older plastic geared boxes.

Pinion gears for Tamiya r/c cars are readily available on ebay and look like they would fit the HL motor shafts on my old Tiger 1. As already mentioned you'd need to drill one new hole in the gearbox plate to re-mount the motor but it should be a pretty easy mod.

Am I right in thinking a lower number of teeth on the pinion gear will result in a reduction in overal speed and increase torque?
