Hi all

Decided to keep hold of my tiger 1 and give it a chance,my plan was to sell it on and buy a tank ready painted and weathered but didn't have any luck selling so I want to have a go my self.

First up the tank has some sort base coat on it but I am not sure if this is a primer or base colour I can see some grey on the chipped paint areas but not sure if that's the bare plastic.do I paint on this or flat it backImageImage

It's got a base coat - dunkel gelb or similar.

I'd ignore the chipped area and cover it with camo - you'll be lucky to match the same yellow paint.

It's a nice blank canvas to start work.

Trouble is pal I don't really want the desert scheme.my plan is to do a Michael wittman tank as he is one of my heroes and my name is Michael whitham so fits well.should I use this colour as primer and then spray another base colour and then paint camo?

The dark yellow was used as a base coat on pretty much every German tank post 43 so you're ok there.

As Tom says, dunkel gelb was base coat - wittmans 007 was camo on top of this colour.

May I suggest hand painting the chipped guard in a red primer, or Tamiya Hull Red XF-9.
This way if/when you do the cam pattern, it might look like damaged or missing paint exposing the usual German undercoat.

Looks a good base from which to launch a great Tiger 1

My take is XF-64 Red Brown
XF-58 Olive Green

over a base of XF-60 Dark Yellow(Dunkelgelb)which you already have on.

The link above does provide some insight as to how it may have looked on the day, but as is the norm with this hobby, its your tank, and the final look shall be yours.
The Tank he took over (007) was a late steel wheel Tiger, yours is an early/mid so hardware wise its not going to be a spot on repro, but as an example of a Tiger that would have looked like that then, go your hardest
