Hi All,

I am looking for suggestions, clean would be nice but open to offers. My old Sherman needs a 6V 4amp sealed lead acid battery and a new speed controller (forward and reverse} I have enclosed a picture just be aware it may be frightening to you pro tank people. Thanks in anticipation of all comments.

That looks way before my time lol....but very cool....If possible ....I'd leave it as it is and try to make it work with a different Battery (which would be easy enough)
The Sketchy part would be the clutch drive....and that huge switch thing in the back ...What is that???? is that the speed control???..it's freaking huge

Yup that things old that's for sure, those were the first type of mechanical speed control I think. They were crude but they worked.
If the rest of the tank is in good condition I would leave it as is and keep it as a display piece. Its a time capsule!
I have an old Tamiya king tiger that has the clutch drive in it with the normal sized mechanical speed control in it. It also has a servo operated flash unit and the flash unit takes C batteries and sounds like one of those old cameras when you charge up the flasher, kind of sounds like iron mans weapon when he charges it up!

You can still buy the battery Maplins or E-bay Battery make is Yuasa ? (spelling?).
I use to use that type of speed controller in the boats many many years ago they had a nasty habit of shorting out and smoking a lot. The board mounted directly on the top of a servo with double sided tape and the wiper screwed onto the servo arm.
I might have a couple of the next generation of them speed controllers (which was a large wound coil with a servo operated wiper and a big heat sink) in the garage somewhere. The early Tamiya RC cars use to use them, I 'll have a look if that's any help.
When they became available most of us switched to 15amp ESC. Believe it or not these boards use to handle up to 15 amps.

Thanks for all the great replies having a realy good laugh here, it is anciant yes but not my grandpas justhis old gits. The elatic band was for holding the cables out of the way. The black box is the controller for the servos. Hi Hawkeye would love to see one of them. I think I will keep it as original as possible I will put some nore pics on later for you to marvel at lol.

Were the instructions written in Runes? Seriously, don't change it! It's one day away from the Science museum, and as fate would have it,we just lately had a thread lately about the beginnings of rctank modelling. Now, clearly, your venerable ancient Sherman certainly predates any models mentioned there...even the Tamiyas. Could it have been one of General Jumbo's prototypes? more pics please.....

Not sure if its a special I bought it second hand in the late seventies for £100, after that I rebuilt it with new parts from Tamiya which I still have some, the place I worked for made me new drive sprockets and new rubber wheels so I have a few spare bits also I think the original Radio so I suppose a bit of a museum piece.
