the servo becomes noisy when it activates, i.e. there is a static sound after it operates. It only becomes noisy if I attach the gun barrel recoil mechanism to it. Without the armature, it is makes no noise. The servo is a brand new HobbyKing™ HK15178I High Speed Digital Metal Gear Servo BB which I just received yesterday:
Your servos sticking and can't return to its end point properly. So the motor stalls and it causes that noise. Try adjusting the servo arm so the barrel sits slightly further back.

I did a lot of adjusting, even lubricated the part where the arm meets the paper clip. Even enlarged the hole. The barrel is free floating, i.e. nothing is making it stick (hence it wobbles when the tank is moving - another problem I'd like to solve).
I should've googled my problem, turns out it isn't really a problem. Apparently, digital servos make such chatter, and it is normal, and that I would be worried if it goes quiet. Another guy had a similar issue and posted a video on YouTube.
N.B., I have another digital servo and it too makes the same noise even WITHOUT anything attached to the arm.

Good stuff! I had a similar sound on my elefant when servos couldn't return to their home position properly

I get that a lot with various projects and servos. If you have a programmable Tx, you can make tiny changes to the travel adjustments, sometimes going from 100% to 96% is enough.
The chatter might not be too bad, but I wouldn't think it would be too good either over time. If a motor is buzzing, it's vibrating or straining, and that can't be good.

Wot he said. My servo recoils do it a lot of the time, it only needs a bit too much friction and the servo can't home itself, so it constantly buzzes. Some do it a lot, some only on occasion. In theory I am shortening the life of the servo as it is constantly trying to run the motor a micron or two. However, as tanks aren't usually run for more than 30 minutes max, I can live with it. A gentle push or pull on the barrel will often solve it.
