Asiatam/Taigen recoil unit problem.

Hi all,

Got my new Taigen Panther F yesterday and has been working on converting it to Clark board. I thought it was going to be an easy swap but it was nothing but. I guess with the stock 360 wiring, Taigen has embedded a patch board in the turret to consolidate all the wiring to the 360 slip ring. Unfortunately the patch board is not a straight pass thru (i.e. They combined the wiring for the turret elevation and recoil with the same pos before go thru to the slip ring). So if you want to separate the elevation motors feeds from the recoil feed, you will need to by-pass this patch board:

I was going to give it a go of re-wiring it but in the process of pulling the plug out half of the wires actually came out of the plug/clamp ! Not being a big fan of 360s anyway, I decided to save myself some work and just hook it up like a "normal tank" rather than using this custom patch board and the 360 wiring. Anyway, after I done that I hook up the Asiatam/Taigen recoil and got this:

Basically there is a delay on the recoil, and it won't return to pre-recoil position unless I give it a little push. Its almost like the signal is not there on-time, and the power feed is not long enough to get the motor to go back to the starting position.

I wired this according to the Clark website, and it has no mention of the negative power feed from the battery/switch like all other installation of this recoil. Could this be my problem ? Although I swear that I have install this recoil according to Clark without the power negative and everything work fine.

Puzzled.

MichaelC.

Does the Clark have to be programmed differently for different recoil systems? I think I read that for asiatam the main gun function should be set for tamiya? I've only got clark boards in airsoft tanks so I haven't yet dealt with the headaches you experience the first time you do a clark board in IR. Airsoft was bad enough, but I was able to find a shortcut for the airsoft sherman that keeps the stock slipring.

Hey Max buddy....... Thanks for the advice. I tried both the Tamiya (first) and then Heng Long recoil setting. Both did the same thing. I have an email in to Clark and he is looking into it. Will see what happens. I might just have to put a servo on it instead.........

Hi MichealC

On the tank I did for a customer with a slip ring (IR version tank) the patch board where everything is plugged in I noticed some of the wiring is commoned up between the Xenon flash and IR. So this is might be causing the problem, a slight leak in circuit maybe through the IR system is reducing the motor power.

I traced out the circuit board

Thank Ian........ You have way more patience then me. I saw that the board is custom to their specific wiring like you said and that was the last straw for me. I didn't care for the 360 turning before and when I start touching this new patch board half the wires came off the crimps. So I cut everything off and remove the 360 altogether. Luckily all the wiring are the original length being stuff into a ball, so it is just a matter of unwinding them and use them like regular connectors.

So to make a long story short, the new patch board is out of the equation, but I do believe there there is a power draw somewhere else for sure. Still doesn't explain why it is a delay between the flash and the recoil unit.

I might try using a regular LED as a flash and see if it makes a difference. I don't think it will since the sound is sync with the flash, and it is the recoil that is delay.

I am sure you found this out already, but because of the share wiring (I assume to reduce the number of wires for the 360) if you don't plug in the IR to complete the circuit, you won't get power to the flash........... :-(

Tank I did was also had recoiling air soft unit so even more head scratching to figure out.

From memory the air soft didn't have a delay or lacked power and that should be wired up same as your recoil unit motor. Although I didn't try it with ir Apple plugged in.

You've probably already checked this, but I'd take a look at the trigger switch. I know on my airsoft recoil turret I had a bad trigger switch and it caused all kinds of problems. I put in a new one and everything worked just like it's supposed to.

Ian, I did one of those airsoft recoil turrets and was able to keep the stock slip ring by re-wiring the thing. I had to crimp some new jst ends, rearrange a bit of stuff in the one large jst plug, and I think two places had to be soldered but it wasn't a seriously difficult install, and of course I did a video of it. I used the IR slip ring kit and it even has wires left over for me to put in a turret machine gun. The Asp has a separate plug for machine gun 2 and then you have two different switches on the 9XR, one for each gun. I think that's pretty cool. But then, I'm easily amused. :) Anyway, I have to replace the airsoft unit in that turret anyway so that would be a good time to add a machine gun. I even already have the LED machine gun, the one from Imex. Not the best MG34, but not bad. How are things going with your 9X, Ian? Is the model matching all sorted out? I have some time off at the end of this month and that's the project in line. By the time I go back to work I want two Tigers running on Asp boards, one airsoft and one IR and tammy compatible, both on the 9XR with model matching enabled. I already bought two bottles of aspirin. :)
