I don't know if it will help but Erik did a video with a breakdown of their new airsoft recoil turret. It might give you some ideas.

jack,

Open up the Pershing I sold you and copy it. It has a typical recoil using servo and the Heng Long BB unit as a frame.

Wot is your tank?

On my HL M1, all I did was remove the airsoft stuff (basically the entire bottom part), free up the gun barrel from the mantlet (cutting away some plastic), made some room in the now gutted airsoft unit for the barrel to travel, installed a paper clip at the end of the barrel through the two small holes while the other end of the paper clip was wrapped around a ball thingy on the servo arm, glued servo to the side of the airsoft body, and test.

The Leo was easy peasy because it share the same barrel for the recoil version. Other tanks you might actually have to get a different barrel. Sherman and KT comes to mind.

Started on the recoil, first cut the airsoft in half, leaving only upper part with shuttle.Image
Here is the shuttle

The barrel it self is to short, so I machined a coupling to connect the barrel to the shuttle.
Image
I bought a lathe two years ago and still learning how to do elementary jobs.
Image
Stock material for the coupling was aluminum tubing I picked at home depot, one side fit perfectly over the shuttle, the other side had to be drilled.
Image
Parts fitted together and shuttle greased
Image
Plastic sides of the housing had to be filed to accommodate the coupling
Image
small servo attached to the unit with epoxy and again some of the plastic material had to be removed to fit everything.

For the flash, I ran wires through the barrel and will attach LED and connector once I get it. Will take a short video after tank is finished.

I didn't know you were converting to flash, Jack, I thought you were after a functioning airsoft cannon with barrel recoil. But that's a pretty cool way you did it. I imagine it will work much better than a motorized recoil.

Jack, I spun my first lathe in 1979 and I still do it for a living so if you need any help let me know.
