The answer is yes. My Spectrum DX6i can control 10 different models. You do have to set up each separately of course and then save the information within the radio. It' takes just a few seconds to change from model 1 to model 5 for example. You'll need a programable radio with multi model memory. There are several brands on the market.

Spectrum DX6i is a programmable radio i assume
is this not specifically designed for use with aircraft
or can be be reprogrammed easily enough
so all inne to purchase is a DX6i the commence to programme the unit to each tank / truck

My 9XR Pro will run 16 different tanks with separate control over each tank simply by changing from model to model on the screen (you just push a couple buttons to get from one to the other), but mine is set up with the FrSky module because I wanted the same "Model Matching" feature that you do. Without the model matching I could still have 16 tanks in memory, but I'd have to only provide power to the tank I want to drive. With model matching I can turn on all the tanks at once and they'll only move if I switch to that tank. With my regular 9X if I had more than one tank turned on at the main power switch they'd both move at the same time with stick movement from the TX, and that's why I wanted model matching, so I can turn on tank a, b and c, drive tank a, park it and switch to tank b, drive that a while and park it, then the same with tank c (up to 16 tanks), and never have to turn any of the tanks on or off before driving them.

I think you will find that all of the "hobby grade" radio system were designed for aircraft use. As far as the DX6i goes, there is a new DX6 on the market (i think it's black in color). I only used the DX6i as reference because that is what I own. Shop around, there are plenty out there.

Jamie, Hi, Joe is right,
There are software upgrades available for certain Radio/Transmitters on the market (TURNIGY9x) that make them more TANK friendly but no one as far as I am aware makes or sells Tank specific Radios other than HENG LONG/TAIGEN or TORRO and those of course are non programmable.
Almost any 2.4 digital Aircraft R/C radio transmitter is programmable, usually with a number of channels available, allowing you to run as many as 10 + tanks on the one radio BUT not at the same time!

Just purchased the newer type dx6i - really good radio and sub £100 with a receiver.

so the following would be suitable to run alongside a unit fitted with DMD.
Spektrum DX6i DSMX 6Ch Radio System w/AR610 Rx
or
DX6 with OrangeRx R615X DSM2/DSMX Compatible 6Ch 2.4GHz Receiver w/CPPM

for give my stupidity but i dont have much luck with handsets and receivers

As shaun said, that will work. And after you receive it, watch this short video I did. It may be of interest to you.
