Mein Opa, Max

This is my maternal Grandfather, Max Herbert Czichaszek, who served aboard the U-52 from 1939 until he was mortally wounded in 1941. There are websites out there that will tell you the U-52 came through the war without any casualties, but I would have to disagree. Max was wounded on board, and taken to hospital in Kiel where he died about two weeks later. Oma never did find out exactly what happened, and was only told it was classified weapons testing. Oma was three months pregnant with my Mother when Max died. And yes, my screen name is a tribute to him.

All respect to him. The u boat crewmen had one of the most dangerous combat missions during ww2.
