Size of bolts!!!!!

Post by brizo58 »

Hi All,
I'd like to ask if any one who has built the tamiya Leo 2A6 and has fitted the upgrade metal wheel set. What size nut runner did you use for the 8 small bolts that hold the wheels together??. There Soooo small. I don't have anything that small in my tool kit. So if any one can help me out I'd be so greatful. Brian...

I have got some screw bags in the for sale section, I'll check to see if they have anything useful.

Hi,
It's not nuts and bolts I need. It's a socket for the bolts in the wheel set. I think it might be 1or2mm!!! But not sure. Brian...

Brian,Hi, Some years ago I bought a DRAPERS SET Pattern Number 30781 which contains a 1/4 drive ratchet, 6 sockets from 5, 5.5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 2 slot heads, 2 cross heads, 2 pozi heads, 4 tx star heads, the set is in constant use especially the ratchet which is tiny but very well made and lets me get into the smallest areas of a Tank to tighten and loosen nuts in confined spaces which means you can avoid using glue but Locktite instead!
I still needed smaller sockets so I went on line and a local BMW specialist Factor was selling a rack of BA Sockets from "0" Down to "10" the Drapers ratchet fits, so these sockets can drive any nut commercially available even down to tow rope cable clamps on a Tiger 1. it changed my builds by making so much removable which would otherwise have been glued in place.
I would start looking on E-BAY quoting BA 1/4 drive sockets.
The smallest nut I have used is a BA 10 which has an outside diameter of 4mm which runs down a 1mm thread verrry smoothly.
if you have no joy I would try a Tool Factor and if they don't have it in stock they could certainly get you a set of BA Sockets.
Good luck  shaun

Brian that's not so small!
Your 2mm nut equates to a size = BA 05 which comes halfway through the accepted BA size range of the smallest at BA 10 up to BA 00.
Both the BA sockets and a 1/4 drive Ratchet are easily found on E-Bay.

BRIAN!!! Now you mention "M" in the specification?
"M" is a particular thread type and you have a 1.4 mm thread and that is SMALL!!! BA socket sizes go down to BA10 which is approximately 3mm so you need something that will grip a 2mm nut and my first thought is a PIN VISE.
Place the nut in the jaws of the Pin vise and tighten, then drive the nut down the thread I am assuming you have both a Pin vise and a choice of Mandrels? Of course you could look on the web for the correct size socket/spanner but I don't think I have ever seen one.
