When I saw the first pictures of the full size prototype, in concert with any soldier who has had to fire a shoulder mounted anti-tank weapon at a Tank I smiled at the apparent "Shot trap" between Body and Turret,
Nothing like giving an infantryman a chance against the latest technology
Not exactly fish in a barrel but I reckon 1 in 3 shots should do the job! shaun

Hi Shaun, those overhangs don't make up the armour of the turret they're just body panels for want of a better word.

Assuming the warhead doesn't go off instantly it'll still focus the projectile into the gap. Think the Israelis put chains on the Merkava?

The crew are in the hull, protected by armour, that is the inherent design. The turret and guns are computer controlled.

No tank is immune, they all have weak spots, and all can be taken out with air support.

Every time I look at my early model Tunisian campaign Tiger 1 I am reminded of why "131" is in the Bovington Tank Museum,
It is because a soldier fired into the shot trap between the Turret and the Hull,
When you go to Bovington you can see the scar on the underside of the barrel where the incoming round struck,
The crew being new to the Tiger feared that as the turret would no longer turn that the Tiger must therefore be critically damaged so they abandoned it.
Rather like a crashed computer it only needed "rebooting" and was in fact totally serviceable.
The Allies gained a brand new Tiger 1 and it cost the Allies no losses at all.
Would you or anybody have the "Bottle"/Guts to stay in an Armata Tank that had just received an impact in the shot trap no matter where you were in that vehicle knowing that if one shot got in the join between the turret and the body more would inevitably follow,
I am sure David can confirm or deny it, but I believe The Tiger 1 was redesigned at that point later on! shaun

My point was its not really a shot trap because it's not armoured, it's only a thin layer which I would imagine be easily penetrated rather than cause a deflection of the incoming round/missile. Look at the front of the leopard a5 onward, that looks like one heck of a shot trap but I very much doubt the brains behind the tank would have designed it thus.

That's the way I saw it. No crew in the turret, and weak turret armour. Crew in the hull, compartment is heavily armoured. Missile hits a 'shot trap' or anywhere else on the turret, and the turret disintegrates, a blast will take the path of least resistance, so no more shot trap for a second hit, but the crew and running gear are safe, so the tank is still mobile and can get to safety with a trained crew ready to jump into another tank. The Russians aren't daft, they rethought the tank design from the ground up. Less weight, less fuel, longer range.

It will also be fitted with a 152mm gun with AP rounds that can go through a meter of steel, and it won't miss. Bear in mind that the twin AA guns are there as well.

Armata is actually a tracked platform capable of hosting a tank, APC, artillery piece and missile launcher. The Armata medium tank is a cutting-edge vehicle with an unmanned turret armed with a brand new 125 mm smoothbore cannon, which is the most powerful gun of its kind to date in terms of muzzle energy.

A crew of two can operate the tank. It is fully computerized and equipped with a wide variety of sensors and other electronic systems that allow for network-centric warfare.

Basically it is one step away away from being a tracked drone with the most powerful tank gun on the planet.
