Forwards/backwards mixed up

Just wired up the KV metal hull etc. Turning is fine, the new HL controller seems very smooth (even I can slowly spin on the spot) but while the turning direction seems fine stick-away is backwards & stick-to-me is forwards.

If it turned the wrong way I'd assume I'd mixed the motor wiring, but not sure what's causing this.

There's also a spare 2 pin plug coming out of the IR turret. Strobe seems to work, but no track recoil. Suspect it ought to go somewhere.....

RobW,
That does sound like Motor wiring. Maybe swap out the plugs at the MFU? If you want to use the track recoil, look at the MFU again. If you have a five pin plug that goes there, there might be a loose two pin plugin attached to the wiring for it, awaiting that one from the turret. Good luck!

The gearboxes on the KV run 'backwards' , but it is easy to reverse their polarity . Use a small tool to depress the little tangs in the 2 pin plugs and simply pull the wires out - and swap over  ( remember to lift the tangs a bit again , so they lock properly again )

Won't that reverse the steering? Or do I then just swap the plugs in the controller too?

You can fix it two ways. Open up the transmitter and on the pot mounted on the tank direction stick gimble you will see a blue wire on one side and a black wire on the other (if they still use the same color wires) at any rate just switch the two wires around. Doing it this way will make that transmitters direction stick work properly only on this tank.
The other is to take the motor wire plugs at the mfu and reverse the were you plug them in. Try running it and if the turn direction in now correct but the forward motion still only happens on down stick you will have to do as blimp say's to the 2 pin plugs, but they will still need to be plugged into the mfu in reverse of where they originally were.
I had 2 tanks do just as yours does and I fixed one by doing the wire switch in the transmitter before I figured out that reversing where they plug into the mfu the is a better option. (I had to do the wire switch around at the motor cable plug like blimp talked about also). So I now have two tanks that move in sync with stick movement but one transmitter that only will work for one tank, in my case its a stug. What I suggest hold true for both the older 27hz rx 18 and the newest 24 gz rx 18 and their transmitters.

RobW, a combination of flipping the pins on the motor plugs and/or switching the left and right plugs on the MFU will fix your problem. You just need to experiment. The only thing you can't change is the hull recoil, so I would start with that (i.e. find the right plug combination so that when you fire the tank moves back and not forward, and then work from there).

Thanks all. Swapping L & R motors seems to have fixed it. Looking at the KV 2 IR turret I think the two spare wires are hull recoil, so not connecting these is a good thing!

Well it drives & the turret turns OK.

When I switch on the gun elevation is constantly on. Will be at Grantham tomorrow so will see if anyone can figure out which wires I've crossed. The KV 1 turret was OK, so wondering if the elevation on the KV 2 is to blame? That or I've connected the recoil to the positive by mistake......

On the plus side, by the time it's fixed I'll have a third degree (electrical eng) and the extension will be built! :/

I think it's just great all the new areas I've learned stuff about due to this wonderful hobby. Not only that, it expands other hobbies as well, like photography. :)

One thing to remember on these turrets is that some stuff is backwards. Usually when you have multiple components the negative will be common and positive will trigger action, but on these turrets that can be backwards, as elevation and airsoft use positive as a common and the negative lead triggers action.

So, wiring the KV 2 turret recoil into the negative (HL RX 18) might not be right?

Edit - will try disconnecting that next.
