Things to fix on your new tank section

Hi All,

Firstly apologies for my absence, her indoors has been a bit poorly lately so I took her away for a week.
Needless to say my Stug III fund is now gone  :( but at least I'm in her good books.  ;) ;D ;D

Anyway, regarding the 'things to fix section'. I think we may have reached a point where we need to make some decisions. Don't get me wrong here, I think this section is an excellent idea and I wish it had existed on the 'other forum' when I started out on this hobby.

My problem is, that as I see it, this section is primarily to show beginners to this hobby the most basic fixes required for their tank and then if they decide they want to go further they use the help, expertise, and guidance that is already available on this forum.

Apologies if I upset anyone here but, what I dont expect to see in this section are posts with extensive lists of mods that have been done to a particular tank.

So, what do we do? Here are a couple of suggestions for discussion :-

1: Leave it as it is and remove extensive modification lists.

2: Allow extensive modification lists but only if they are done in such a way that they form a tutorial with plenty of pics and explanation. ( Sounds like a build log to me )

3: Ask members who have already done an impressive build on any of the tanks to post a step by step guide from the basics right through to the finished tank. ( Build log again.... )

4: Instead of re-inventing the wheel provide a link to an existing 'top notch' build of each tank.

What are your thoughts on this one people?

Cheers
John

I agree John, any fixes should be kept simple(ish) and have lots of pics. I think providing links to point to more extensive builds & mods is a great idea.

Cheers

i agree to, there should be just simple fixs, that have a tutorial on how to do them, not just a long list of what somebodys done, as that doesnt really help anybody,

cheers,

Matt

Hi John i like your idea of a link to a existing build for the more in depth detail as this new section was added for the more simple and obvious inaccuracies that people could change if they wish.

I think the best approach is to have a single 'master' list with links to 'show you how' subsets.  It is then possible to see at a glance the art of the possible, choose those you wish to undertake yourself and obtain the relevant info.  It is quite hard otherwise to see the totality of what can be done, and also hard to find that nugget of info hidden in separate threads.

I think it's best to put everything  in one section then you can cherry pick whatever you need for your own build.

We're getting to the stage now where we have a section for just about everything and its starting to get a little fussy on here. If the info was split into different sections you just may miss something important you wanted to add or change.

If there was a section for each tank with everything you could ever want to do to that particular model then its all in the one place to use as you see fit.

Here's my thoughts, appologies if I repeat some of the previous posts but I couldn't really avoid doing that without the post failing to convey what I had in mind... ;D

I think a tank by tank "here's a list of things that can be fixed in 30 mins or less" would be the way to go. Some people do way more than others, and their work belongs in a build thread.
The various posts could be gathered into a single master list, and then people can post pics/tips underneath it.
We should stick to things you can do with the tank as it comes out of the box, so no posts with a shopping list of metal tracks / wheels / photo etch grills etc. If you are telling people that they really need to spend $800 on parts right away, then you've missed the point! What we are trying to do is show people easy and inexpensive tweaks that would correct the most glaring flaws of their $100 'toy' to get them into the hobby. The rest can be added later as and when funding and skills are available.

Some examples of what I have in mind is Rob's thread on correcting the M41's vision ports, my thread on correcting the tiger mantlet and John's post on flipping the turret side hatches on the Panzer IIIL. These are all things that somebody with little experience could easily do to improve the appearance of their tank, without scaring them off by showing them pictures of something from the master class and implying that they need great modellers to make the end result look good.
