Ok so I'm going to start to prime my Tiger I in red oxide primer paint and do the high lights with darker red with my air brush but I'd like more info on the whole using hairspray for chipping and scratches and detailing. Is there any info anyone could point me toward so I can do some reading on this so I can at least give it a proper go without messing up my tank. Not really sure what to search without getting overloaded.
Either that or if anyone could post the proper steps and what to do and how to do it that would be great too.
Thanks Guys.
Yes I plan to post pics as soon as my daughter shows me how to upload them from my phone, for this one I plan to post its complete build start to finish and yes any help is most welcome.

I found you get better results using a chipping fluid, the AK scratched effects one I've found is the best of the ones I've tried. The Mig Ammo one is far too concentrated. They give a more consistent and predictable result.
So the steps are:
1. Primer - for this you want a real bonding primer. Plastikote Red Oxide is pretty good on all surfaces but takes a couple of days to fully cure.
2. Fake primer - So the colour you want to show through the chips. You can use the plastikote finish but IMHO it's far to light. Helps if it matches up with chipping colours you might use to touch up later on. Tamiya Red Oxide is pretty good. Also Mig Ammo Red Primer Base is really nice.
Let that all cure for a while, it needs to be hard and dust free.
3. Spray on your chipping whatever in thin coats, I've found personally that most of these products take one coat if you want a used finish. Let is dry.
4. Spray on your bottom coat, the main colour in light coats until you get a solid finish. Let it dry but not fully cure. The longer you leave it, the hard it is to get off again.
5. Get some warm water and a selection of brushes and soft tools to make scratches, tooth picks are good as well as old stiff flat brushes.
6. Wet the brush and move over areas of wear, start with some edges so you get a feel for how much brushing and pressure you need to scratch the pain. Same with the scratches with a tooth pick, go in lightly first and get a feel for it.
7. Let it fully cure for a while. Don't apply the next layer until the previous one is fully bonded.
Now if you want to apply more colours:
8. apply another layer of chipping whatever where you intend to paint. If you're using silly putty to mark out camouflage then in those areas. Make sure it doesn't well or it will affect the previous layer.
9. Once dry, apply your next paint layer. This takes a little patience as you'll want to go through the 2nd layer to show chips in the first layer that show the primer but at the same time leave scratches which just go through the freshly painted layer.
It's takes a little time. Personally I prefered AK chipping fluid and Tamiya paints for this process. I tried the Mig AMMO paints on this and didn't feel the outcome was as good.
FYI there is a Weathering Magazine edition all on chipping, it's well worth reading.

I've only tried it on a test piece but I found it to be quick and easy.
Quick run through-
Halfords red oxide undercoat over sprayed with very cheap hairspray and left to dry.
Grey Base coat.
Base coat rubbed off with Q-tips and cocktail sticks.
Sealed with gloss varnish
Top (winter) coat.
Top coat rubbed off with Q-tips and cocktail sticks.
When you've finished you must make sure it is sealed in well with varnish or the paint will just keep coming off.

I used the hairspray caper on 2 of mine, both were white wash finished.
Trick is to use the spray only once you are happy that the layer under it is what you want to be seen.
In the case of primer, once you coat the tank with hairspray over the primer is how much red do you want to show through after you've done the effects later on ?
Assuming the thing is well covered with hairspray, you must do your cover colour as normal. I cannot say how your respective paint will react-or not- with the type of spray used.
Once the cover coat is well dry, I used a damp toothbrush to basically bang on the surfaces to remove the paint to the degree of finish as required.
This is the bit that makes you nervous
To much water on the brush will over reactivate the spray, not enough and you wont remove the cover layer.
Its a trial act really, but well worth the results.

Wow thanks guys! I searched for the AK chipping fluid but it looks like AK products aren't sold in the U.S., for whatever reason I can only find it from the UK or AU. I've found a place that sells AK effect fluid in groups of 4,5, or 6 different types from the UK so I may order that, it just sucks that I'd have to wait a week to 10 days to get it.
Now as for primer I used automotive red-oxide primer, but I need to go get 1 more can. I didn't realize that there is THAT many pieces to paint from the Hobby Boss model and Taigen chassis but it took 1 whole can to do 1 side of the road wheels, lower hull, turret and gun barrel, rear bulkhead, and detail parts. I still need to paint my upper hull parts and the other side of the road wheels.
Hairspray I can get right now but I really like some of the effects AK sells so I may just have to wait and order the stuff from the UK, UGH! Why can't someone sell this kind of stuff in the U.S.?!?!?!?
