Poly Cement

Ive painted some of my components in acrylic paint prior to assembly. My question is can I now apply the poly cement to these painted surfaces to join these together or will I have to remove the paint where I want the components to adhere, which really defeats the objective.
Cheers guys

You will have to remove the paint from areas you are going to put cement otherwise it just wont cement together.
Hope this helps.

Hi Awins, the cement or plastic weld work by dissolving/melting a layer of styrene which is what then forms the bond between the components. The paint prevents this from happening so I'm afraid it won't bond. Generally I don't paint until assembly is finished, or if I have to attach something to the painted surface I have to remove the paint or use superglue, but superglue only attaches to the surface of the paint, not the structure underneath so that again isn't a real solution. Only thing to do is remove the paint from the surfaces to be bonded I'm afraid. Cheers Alwyn

Thank you guys, if I had thought a little more about this I should of realized this before starting the painting of these certain components. Oh well a a lesson learned and all part of the learning process. Once again thank you.

You could in the future try masking off at least part of the area that you are going to glue together later and still prepaint the majority of the pieces.
