Gearboxes?

Can some explain in simple laymans terms the differences, I am looking here:

http://www.rctank.de/US-M41-BULLDOG_5

What's the difference between 3:1 & 4:1 ratio? Advantages/disadvantages.
Low ratio what's all that about?
Long axles, why are there long axle options if all the gearboxes fit the same tank?

Excuse my ignorance.

Thanks

Tony

think if it like the transmission in your car. The lower the gearing the more power and less speed.

Thanks so 3:1 will be slower than 4:1 but will give more power to climb gradients, is that right?

When I'm ready to start the Bulldog I'll contact Forgebear, at the mo I'm upgrading the lower chassis/wheels/idlers and sprockets on my HL Tiger 1 (all from Forgebear) so I need to see how I get on doing that before I move on to the next job, as all this is completely new to me.

Somebody said at the start I should arrange an overdraft facility at the Bank, they were so right :/

Thanks AFV clearer now, I think  the little video is useful, I'm after torque as opposed to speed so simply a 4:1 or four shaft, although I accept from that thread that this might not necessarily be the case

Tony, that's what I wanted, torque.. I have an old tiger I added metal to years ago and it ended up that heavy it wouldn't turn, got a set of taigen 4:1 gearboxes off dave (forgebear ), problem solved. A bit of a loss on top speed but better torque and as a side note some say the taigen gearboxes won't fit the heng long hull but the ones I got dropped straight in.

best regards Jack.
