So there you are trying to fit a new gearbox into your Tank, the screws are deep set so usually you would use a magnetic screwdriver but the screw is surrounded by metal so that's a no go, Try dipping the head of the screw in a heavy grease, (VASELINE/AXLE GREASE/HAIRCREAM)that will allow it to stick to the screwdriver until the screw is tight, and it is no problem releasing the screwdriver. shaun

Hi Shaun, great tip, the other thing I use in these situation is a little bit of blue tack which can be useful if you don't want to leave residue on or around the screw, and it can also be useful when trying to position or glue small pieces in awkward situations. Regards Alwyn

I will pay on that Mr Jarndice. I found the rear screw set on my King Tiger gear set with different motors was under the high set motor !
(it was longer than stock)had to use a tooth pick with bluetack to get it into the hole, then bend a jewelers screwdriver to make it home .......

I bought a set of 'precision workshop screwdrivers' from Halfords last year. Come in a grey plastic box, pictures show the screwdrivers with a matt black tip, top 5-6mm. Only the very tip of them are magnetised, enough to hold a screw.

MAC Hi, If you read my TIP properly you would see that I could not use a magnetic screwdriver because when you are trying to fit a screw into the base plate of a gearbox both the screw and the screwdriver are surrounded by METAL all the way into the bowels of the gearbox!!! Which means that the magnetic attraction of the screwdriver is ineffective because of all the METAL! And that is why I suggested an alternative. shaun

Great tip! Until someone comes out with a screwdriver set that effectively puts the concept of granular jamming to use, we will have to make do with magnetics and info like this. To add my own tip, laying any steel screwdriver on a rare earth magnet ( I use HDD magnets ) for 10-15 minutes will turn that driver into a magnetic driver. The effect fades but is useful when it's late at night and Halfords, Home Depot, McGuckins, etc. is closed.

Painless old friend you beat me to it, I was going to point out that I in common with just about everyone of us own every sort of screwdriver from an engineers to jewellers and every thing in between, and if you own as I do a WERA STAR magnet which is built to magnetise/demagnetise screwdrivers you save yourself a fortune. shaun
